This is a great example of building tone through editing.
I came across this neat video today and wanted to share. I love the simplicity of it; no need to say anything.
I saw this spot a few weeks ago and was struck by its view of adventure. Even though nobody would ever actually do half of the things that happen in this ad, it's the feeling that counts. I know what it feels like to be young and feel like every wave is a tsunami and every flirtatious moment is the culmination of existence.
What I love about this video is the way it romanticizes the ordinary moments in life. Culture is in a funny place right now where many people feel compelled to share every meal or sunset on social media. While there are certainly dangers to this mentality, I do think there's a benefit in recognizing the small beauties around us all the time. If we can't learn to appreciate the ordinary, we will waste a good majority of life. Perhaps the next step is to treasure them in our hearts, not on our newsfeed.
Working in a creative field, there is a constant push to be original. To be the first; the best, the only one doing what you're doing. Sometimes this is done at the expensive of perfecting a skill you already have.
One of my goals as a creative person is to take my primary passion, narrative storytelling, and refine it the rest of my life. I can't do it all; I can't be an athlete and a teacher and a writer and a salesman and a preacher and a cook. Nor do I desire that anymore. At one point, the "jack of all trades" mentality seemed almost necessary. Now, I want to focus. I want to be a master.
My challenge today is to identify your Vital North and begin the journey of mastering it.
Hello, friends. The journey is about to begin! It's been a long one, but I realize now the timing is perfect. The first step (or word, or brush stroke, or prototype) is always the most difficult, but there is a true beauty in being in a place of vulnerability. Right now, VNC has to trust in its mission and believe that people actually want what we have to offer. And what is that, exactly? Well, on paper it's videos and retreats and speaking engagements, but in reality its about something much deeper. Vital North was created to be challenging. To be refreshing. To change, in some small aspect, the way the world works. We have to trust people want more.
While Vital North is a business, it's more importantly an expression of deep love for the people of this world. Sure, we hope to make a profit and keep our families fed, but that really isn't important if the world we live in is a terrible place. Vital North has to be about more. I know I can't give this much of my life to something I don't believe in. Who I am has to become what I do, or else what is the point? We only get one shot at this, so there's no excuse to not give everything you can everyday.
With this in mind, I wanted to share a cool video about taking the first step. Climb the mountain and find your Vital North.
